Deleting a DOI

DOIs are expected to be persistent identifiers for data and should not be deleted. For this reason no delete functionality exists within the ARDC DOI Service.

The preferred approach is to update the DOI's URL to point to a landing page that explains why the data set is no longer available or a 'tombstone page'. You may refer to DataCite's Best Practices for Tombstone Pages for guidance and example.

You may also contact services@ardc.edu.au for further information or assistance.

Changing the state of the DOI from Findable to Registered does not delete a DOI. The DOI will continue to resolve to the URL associated with it. Changing the DOI to Registered only prevents the DOI's metadata from being returned by the public 'Get DOI Metadata' service endpoint, and by DataCite's Metadata Search and OAI-PMH feed.
