R13 Announcements/News

ANDS Software Release 13 implementation has been successfully completed and the following Online Services are now available:

  • ANDS Production Registry
  • Research Data Australia
  • Identify My Data
  • Cite My Data

NOTE: Some background tasks are still running and users may experience slower than normal response times.

Release 13 includes:

  • Implementation of an export to Endnote function from view pages
  • Enhancement to Research Data Australia's (RDA's) URLs to support Search Engine Optimisation
  • Implementation of an improved 'Contact Us' form in RDA
  • Rewrite of the Data Source Settings page of ANDS Registry ("ORCA") to fix random error messages displayed when viewing or editing the page
  • Addition of Thomson Reuters DCI export options to Data Source account page
  • Rewrite of the ANDS Harvester software to improve performance and error reporting and to support CKAN and CSW import

ANDS Software Release 13 is scheduled for implementation on Thursday, 17th July 2014.  Below is the schedule of activities for your information and reference: 

Wednesday, 16th July  -

8:00am (AEST) onwards:

  • Release 13 soft release to Demonstration (Demo) environment
  • The following services will be unavailable:
    • Research Data Australia Demo
    • ANDS Demo Registry
    • Identify My Data test service

5:00pm (AEST)onwards: 

  • Release 13 production implementation preparation
    • ANDS Production Registry will be in READ-ONLY mode (no new harvests or record edits premitted)
    • Research Data Australia available as usual

Thursday, 17th July - 8:00am-12:00pm (AEST):

  • Release 13 Production release
  • The following services will be intermittently unavailable during software release:
    • ANDS Production Registry
    • Research Data Australia
    • Cite My Data (DOI) service
    • Identify My Data (PIDS) service

Please find below the summary of all Release 13 changes with an overview of who, what and how the changes will impact our users. Release 13  is scheduled for implementation in July. Please note that these are the planned features, subject to timetabling changes.

Research Data Australia:

Implementation of an export to Endnote function from view pages

  • Change: Implement a functionality in Research Data Australia's collection view page to allow users to to export collection references to EndNote
  • Who is affected: Research Data Australia users
  • Impact:  Research Data Australia users will now have the option to export collection references into EndNote and other Bibliographic software which supports the (Research Information Systems) RIS format.
  • Documentation affected/needed: Help guide
  • Requirements: Release announcements will be sent to ANDS staff, partners and general users.

Enhancement to RDA's URLs to support Search Engine Optimisation

  • Change: Enhancement to RDA's URL slug to support  SEO
  • Who is affected: Research Data Australia users
  • Impact: Research Data Australia records will now have shorter URL slugs, thus expected to be promoted and easier to find when using search engines such as Google. Record slugs generated prior to R13 will continue to resolve as expected.
  • Documentation affected/needed: None
  • Requirements: Release announcements will be sent to ANDS staff, partners and general users.

Implementation of an improved 'Contact Us' form in RDA

  • Change: An improved 'Contact Us' form will be implemented in Research Data Australia
  • Who is affected: Research Data Australia users
  • Impact:  An enhanced, more user-friendly 'Contact Us' form will now allow users to provide more information and context to the email or request they send to services@ardc.edu.au via Research Data Australia.
  • Documentation affected/needed: None
  • Requirements: Release announcements will be sent to ANDS staff, partners and general users.

ANDS Registry

Rewrite of the Data Source Settings page of ANDS Registry

  • Change: The Data Source Settings page of ANDS Registry ("ORCA") will be re-written to fix random error messages displayed when viewing or editing a data source page
  • Who is affected: Data Source Administrators, Client Liaison Officers, ANDS Metadata Assessors, ANDS Collections Registry Administrators
  • Impact:  Users will no longer be confused by the random error messages displayed when a Data Source account is viewed.  Consequently, this will also minimise the number of unnecessary emails sent to services@ardc.edu.au.
  • Documentation affected/needed: None
  • Requirements: Release announcements will be sent to ANDS staff, partners and general users.

Addition of Thomson Reuters DCI export options to Data Source account page

  • Change: Add an option to the Data Source Account page which allows Data Sources to opt into the Thomson Reuters DCI export process
  • Who is affected: Data Source Administrators, Client Liaison Officers, ANDS Metadata Assessors, ANDS Collections Registry Administrators
  • Impact:  Data Sources who are ready to provide records to the Thomson Reuters DCI, can request ANDS to turn on the feed via their Data Source Account.
  • Documentation affected/needed: Data Source Settings page help
  • Requirements: Release announcements will be sent to ANDS staff, partners and general users.

Rewrite of the ANDS Harvester software

  • Change: Rewrite of the ANDS Harvester software to provide further support for schema agnostic data feeds, improve performance and error reporting
  • Who is affected: Data Source Administrators, Client Liaison Officers, ANDS Metadata Assessors, ANDS Collections Registry Administrators
  • Impact: The new Harvester will support different harvest methods other than OAI and GET (E.g. CKAN & CSW). Crosswalks for additional harvest methods and data types can developed be added to the registry as needed. Enhancements have been made to the Dashboard page in the Registry to support improved reporting and new harvester features. For maintenance, the ANDS Data Source Administrators will now be alerted or notified when a scheduled harvest fails.
  • Documentation affected/needed: Data Source Settings page help, Technical Guide for adding additional harvest methods
  • Requirements: Release announcements will be sent to ANDS staff, partners and general users.

Others:

Enhancement to Thomson Reuters web service

  • Change: Minor tweaks to the Thomson Reuters DCI export to address feedback from Thomson Reuters
  • Who is affected: DCI Pilot participants
  • Impact: None
  • Documentation affected/needed: None
  • Requirements: Release announcements will be sent to ANDS staff, partners and general users.

Enhancement to ORCID/ORCA import interface

  • Change: Enhancements to the ORCID Import interface
  • Who is affected: ORCID users
  • Impact: Researchers with ORCID ID will now have more flexibility in importing their RDA records to ORCID.  The import widget will now have the option to easily select individual record and confirmation/affirmation will be required prior to import.  This will ensure that only valid records are associated to a researcher and minimise dubious or incorrect record association in ORCID.
  • Documentation affected/needed: ANDS and ORCID - Making the connection video, ORCID Widget Help
  • Requirements: Release announcements will be sent to ANDS staff, partners and general users.

Minor change/bug fix:

  • Fix an issue with the Theme Pages facets in Research Data Australia

The next major ANDS Online Services release , Release 13,  scheduled for implementation in July.  This release includes a number of small bug fixes as well as some larger optimisation and maintenance changes. Some highlights of the planned changes include:

Research Data Australia:

  • Biannual broken links report implementation
  • Implementation of an export to Endnote function from view pages
  • Enhancement to RDA's URLs to support Search Engine Optimisation
  • Implementation of an improved 'Contact Us' form in RDA including "data request"

ANDS Registry:

  • Rewrite of the Data Source Settings page of ANDS Registry ("ORCA") to fix random error messages displayed when viewing or editing the page
    • Addition of Thomson Reuters DCI export options to Data Source account page
  • Rewrite of the ANDS Harvester software to provide further support for schema agnostic data feeds, improve performance and error reporting
    • Support for native CKAN import (profile for data.gov.au
    • Support for native OGC CSW "harvest"

Others:

  • Enhancement to Thomson Reuters web service 
  • Enhancement to ORCID/RDA import interface
